CHAPTER FIFTEEN

JANE HAD BEEN RIGHT; there was a difference. Never had Devon been so profoundly moved or forever changed by another's touch. He hadn't known it possible. Now that he did, it terrified him. Her tears on his shoulder told him she'd been every bit as affected by the encounter—and that scared him even more.

Devon didn't know what to do next, another in the long line of new feelings Jane brought with her. Regardless of his current confusion, he wasn't ready to break the spell between them. He shifted them both so he could lie down with her wrapped safely in his arms. He stroked her hair, wondering if he'd ever stop being fascinated by her and wishing there was something he could do to make her feel better.

Understanding the source of her tears would probably be a good start, he knew, but he didn't have the courage to ask. He wasn't entirely certain he wanted to know the answer. Was she merely as affected as he, or was there something else amiss? He didn't think he could bear the guilt if she regretted what had happened between them. Jane was everything light and good in the world. He didn't want to be the one to tarnish that glow. Had he already?

Jane grew quiet; her breath evened. Devon debated going back to his own room but quickly set the notion aside. He couldn't bring himself to let go of her yet. She was propped up on one elbow, studying him with solemn green eyes. Devon wanted to take her delicate face in his hands, to pepper her sweet nose and cheeks with kisses. The look in her eyes stilled his hand, though. It was Jane who reached out to place a hand on Devon's cheek; he instinctively leaned into the touch.

“You are such a beautiful man,” she murmured, never taking her eyes off him.

He captured her hand, bringing it to his lips to brush a kiss against her palm.

There was a hint of sadness to her smile. “You've always been honest about who you are. I don't want you to worry that I'll expect something more from you.”

Devon furrowed his brow, not entirely following her.

“I can feel you pulling away from me.” She stopped as if searching for the words that should come next. With a mirthless laugh, she continued. “I guess I just don't want you to worry that I'll be expecting a ring or anything. You don't have to start preparing an exit strategy. I'm a big girl. I made my choice, eyes open.”

“Ah.” Devon wasn't sure how to respond to that. She was giving him a free pass. He could read in her body language that it wasn't what she wanted. He
